Nihon Falcom has confirmed their next major release is in the Ys franchise. I'll put current information about the game here as it's released and upload promotional images and such, as well as links to articles where I found them.
  • It's scheduled for a Fall 2019 release for PS4 in Japan. International release and ports to other platforms are not known at this time.
  • Adol will return once again to adventure, but he is depicted differently than before. Including in appearance.
  • Takes place in the prison city of Barduke (or Baldeux, or Balduq; romanization is hard?), which is a highly vertical urban zone with a countryside area around it. You can climb onto the rooftops and run along them. It is a stage for action with mysteries to explore and gimmicks to play with.
  • Takes place after all Ys games so far. Adol, the protagonist of the series, has built a reputation by now
  • Guild system has Adol run a guild in the city, an upgrade on the castaway village in Ys 8
  • Adventure gear system from Ys 8 will be replaced with something that can handle many more utility upgrades
  • Monstrum are people or creatures that possess supernatural abilities. Some of them will join Adol for party-based gameplay similar to the previous titles. It's also possible that you can switch between characters but play solo on each, without support characters tagging along and helping in the fight.
  • Monstrum Nox means Night of the monsters
  • Many more movement options including a form of flying
  • The lady in the picture above has a major role on the story

Ys IX first gameplay, new details

What do you think? I'm carefully hyped for the first Ys not primarily designed for a portable console. It seems like a good upgrade on Ys 8 features wise, too. Also, feel free to banter about previous Ys games if you like

  • Takes place after all Ys games so far. Adol, the protagonist of the series, has built a reputation by now

This is coming from Ys 8, he already has a reputation in the higher echelons of the big powers and some of them are keeping a eye on him

  • Guild system has Adol run a guild in the city, an upgrade on the castaway village in Ys 8

The castaway village was a very neat system, but this only confirm that you will have to grind for materials to upgrade your guild same as in Ys 8

  • Adventure gear system from Ys 8 will be replaced with something that can handle many more utility upgrades

So the old rings are coming back?

Adol is probably himself one considering the magic system is based on these supernatural abilities

It is stated in several games that Adol doesn't have any talent for magic, the only way that he can use it is by using artifacts and trinkets, he probably is going to get by using his M4DZ SW0RDZ ZKILZZ like he always does

Going to wait the inevitable PC port, need to finish Memories of Celceta first, i hope that they announce a remake of City of sand that is the only Ys that is not being upgraded recently (it got a PS2 upgraded version but was never released in america or translated)

Here Kondo states it's being upgraded. I should probably have added this to the links in the OP.

The new “Guild Management” system is an upgraded version of the “Drifting Village” feature from Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana.

As good as the Ys 8 gameplay was, I think these games do better overall when they go short and sweet. Oath in Felghana is a pretty much perfect game whereas I felt 8 was overstaying it's welcome by the end being so story heavy. Still, this'll be a day one purchase.

I remember the joke about Adol being the James Bond of Action RPGs, in every stance he get a girl but for some reason or another he always ditch them for more adventure!!

Or at least an one off spinoff. A full length game of just solo Dana gameplay. Basically Ys Origin 2.

While I have no problem with the party system there’s nothing wrong with tight solo system games in the spirit of the 2.5D games.

Then again Ys 5 remake should happen eventually too...

Ys 8 on Switch is pretty good. It has a lower frame rate than the PC/PS4 editions but still perfectly playable (30fps usually).

It’s essentially the original PS Vita edition on steroids.

I'm interested in trying the Ys series but whereshould i start? Do i play them chronologically (that's a part of my ocd that i prefer to do read/play/watch in chronological order unless doing so ends up spoiling a franchise overall story) and which versions should i pick
