Zero Carb/Full Carnivore Diet -

I am presently a week into a diet that consists of nothing but ground beef and water. This was partially inspired by hearing about a couple of people who chose to adopt this diet; Shawn Baker and Jordan Peterson. At first I was dubious and thought of it as a meme, or at least in Peterson's case an extremist elimination method that had niche benefits for a niche subset of the population.

However, the more I read the more I got interested. There are quite a few people who are increasingly adopting a full carnivore diet, and there was an interesting Reddit and Discord which had a wealth of material and anecdotes. So I gave it a try - as someone who never really enjoyed his greens or his carbs, I thought that I was hardly depriving my tastebuds of anything and would hopefully shake off the sugar addiction.

It's been very interesting. I've lost a lot of water weight, have far less DOMS after the gym, and feel a lot more alert and stable in my mood. This is only a week in, and I'm interested in seeing how I feel after a full month on it.

I'm curious in what Kiwis think about this diet. A total meme, or is there something too it? I'm happy to answer any questions as someone doing it myself.

Seriously though I sincerely hope you're at least getting vitamin supplements from somewhere else because historically a non-fruit, non-greens, and non-carbs diet hasn't played out very well for people.

I was already taking a pretty extensive multivitamin package for training reasons. But I don't think there's much that I get from that which I couldn't get from organ meats and bone marrow.

Interestingly, the Vit C deficiency is only a problem because Vitamin C and Glucose share the same receptor and glucose crowds it out. Since this diet is ketogenic, you'll have a very low glucose level and thus the little vitamin C you get from meat alone (not counting supplements) is sufficient for your body.

Remember, the average ration of a sailor in the age of scurvy was hardtack and beer. That explains the scurvy problem; their diet was ill-equipped to synthesise Vit C, not that they weren't naturally getting enough of it. The citrus only boosted their levels sufficiently to properly compete for receptor space against the massive amount of carbs they were taking.

EDIT: As for the shitting thing, I've had no problem so far. That's not to say it's the biggest thing I'm wary about. But I've had few bowel movements so far, and I don't feel constipated - apparently the intestine absorbs meat and fat pretty well. I'll have fibre supplements on hand if things change, though.

Why don't you just go jogging or hiking, or walking.

Serious, it doesn't matter what you eat along as you are burning more than you intake.

Simple maths.

I do. I'm a powerlifter, and I do around 4 hours of cardio a week in the gym. Along with hiking on weekends.

This diet appeals for several reasons.
  • It kills DOMS dead, from both anecdote and from my experience so far. Thus, my recovery time is shorter and I can lift more.
  • It's very rigid, and seems to cut my appetite greatly - I've not snacked once since I've started, and had no sugar cravings.
  • It's cheap and straightforward. Minced beef is fairly cheap, and I don't need to devote myself much to cooking or prep outside of 8-10 minutes of frying and then cleaning the pan out.
I just learned that apparently we still have left-over hardtack from the Civil War tucked away in a museum. It's not remotely related to the topic of this thread, but this thread caused me to learn something completely ass-random so I'm subjecting all of you to it now, too.

Eat it for a dare.

You should vary your meats dude.

Not just ground beef, as it's the most basic bitch shit, but you also should go for pork, chicken, fish. You're looking for a high protein diet for starting ketosis. Also, you need a few complex carbs no matter what in order for your body to function without falling apart.

If you want to as well, avocado is literally a meat fruit. It's savory, full of monos, and it's a great addition to well, everything.

Definitely. Right now just sticking to minced beef for budgetary reasons.

The only necessary thing for entering ketosis is a sufficient fat intake. More protein is always good, though.

Also, you need a few complex carbs no matter what in order for your body to function without falling apart.

I'm keeping an eye on that end. But so far my bowel functions are great, and energy levels are fine. What bodily functions do you think complex carbs are absolutely necessary to maintain?

Oh stop. Every year we have studies that says X is good for you to consume and Y is bad for you and then they reverse that years later.

To think your so called diet is the silver bullet is laughable.

I never specified that it was a silver bullet. Those reasons I gave are pretty fungible, and they're pretty good upsides that encouraged me to take it up. Pretty big failure in reading comprehension to conflate some benefits I've encountered with claims that it's a miracle.

Any extreme is bad, you should consider chewing some vegs or fruits, we're omnivorous after all.

If shit goes bad, sure. But I disagree that 'any extreme' is bad - what is deemed to be extreme is relative. We are omnivorous, but our digestive systems more closely mirror carnivorous mammals than that of herbivores. The very fact we have agriculture is indicative of the fact we can handle carbohydrates and sugars, but one interesting idea I've encountered is that they are foods that man was adapted to consume as a contingency, rather than a staple. That's speculative conjecture, of course.

So you know how diabetics end up with ketones so damn high it causes their blood to turn acidic and kill them? It's called Ketoacidosis.

It can happen as well if you completely cut all carbs out of your diet.

Yet to encounter a single case of someone who's entered ketoacidosis as a result of this diet. Although it can happen if you have an underlying medical condition and abuse it.

i tell you what, you'll have the asshole of a gay pornstar if you eat nothing but meat

you will quite literally shit bricks

that's my fetish

My question is how does this affect Chron's and IBS dickweeds like me

I haven't done much research. I've heard it help with inflammation, but I haven't buried into that. As an elimination diet it's a good way to remove potential stressors.

Ketoacidosis is a completely different thing from Ketosis. Ketosis actually lowers insulin levels greatly. When I was doing keto, I had my best ever activity levels and the best sleep ever.

@kinglordsupreme19, you need some measure of carbs for your kidneys to function properly, what you're trying to do is essentially a keto diet, so consult r/keto for meal plans and such, because not only are you lacking nutrients and other necessary elements in your diet (fiber is definitely one of them, you will soon have constipation problems), you are also going to get deathly bored of eating a small selection of items and that isn't a good idea.
