It was a service dog. Many, if not most, reputable service dog organizations in the US have agreements where the service dog goes back to the organization when the client dies or it's determined they no longer need it, ie the client goes into long term assisted care. Some will let family keep if it was also a family pet. Organization where you train your own "service dog" are on the rise. These are a step between bullshit service animals where people just lie and dogs trained for thousands upon thousands of dollars. There is a company that also does the initial training for the city and SWAT K9 offer a free multi-month course for disabled veterans in my state for instance. This is becoming more popular because there can be multi-year wait lists and not everyone needs a dog trained to the level that a quadriplegic would.Rip i guess
