I know someone who is a dual US/German citizen, who went through ungodly paperwork nightmare, several canceled flights, waiting for hours at airports, needing special permissions, etc..just to enter the country with their legal American spouse.

They own a home in Germany, had been living in the USA the past decade, but she was a German passport holder with a American spouse and only after amazing efforts and weeks of paperwork were they finally able to enter Germany last year.


Our embassies are very clear - Americans cannot enter Germany. EU passport holders can, but not Americans.

The only exceptions have been emergency medical or research personnel who can be given special entry visas.

And this has been the case for almost a year now. Entry into Germany for Americans, unless via very special permission, is a big NO. The main exception to this rule has been if an American is legally married to a German citizen they will be allowed to enter the country with the citizen spouse.

Do you think it could have been possible for her if she transited through another country like the UK? I know Brexit has complicated things this side of the pond, but the UK was still open to American citizens who’d cleared a 14 day quarantine and had negative test result as far back as last summer.

It’s fairly easy for an EU citizen to come into the US though the ‘back door’, despite major travel bans, by quarantining in an non travel restricted country for 14 days prior to traveling to the US. I wouldn’t put it past people to sneak in to the EU in these ways if they could exploit a loophole.

Was anywhere else in the EU letting Americans in? They don't really check your passport if you drive there from Czechia etc so it's possible she got in that way.

An American entering Germany is an entirely different matter and is not permitted under current travel restrictions.

Why people are trying to jump through hoops on how some dying girl could have possibly been smuggled into Germany? It all just being bullshit is a much more obvious solution.

Dual citizenship would only be possible if she was born to a German and Other nationality parents. Like a German mother gives birth in the USA, the child would be allowed to be a dual citizen. Germany only allows dual citizenship in that kind of circumstance.

If an American citizen wants to become a German citizen they have to relinquish their American citizenship. American spouses of German citizens are usually just legal residents - not citizens - for this reason.

She specifically referenced trying to “get residency” on one of her tweets, not something any dual citizen would have to worry about doing.

The more interesting question is the motive, did she in fact need $25,000 for medical expenses? Or is it also a lie on the same level that all the false cancer patients were charged with fraud for raising money for diseases they didn't have.
