I got the impression Putin started off wanting to be pro-western, but got increasingly disillusioned with the West as it became more and more obvious that the West would only accept Russia as a vassal state with no legitimate interests of it's own. I think the West's failure to actually make friends with Russia will go down in history as one of the greatest geopolitical blunders of all time. Russia, both governmentally and culturally, was extremely open to the West after the collapse of the USSR. Instead of building on that, we basically spent the next 30 years antagonizing and exploiting Russia. If we had played our cards right, we could have had Russia as an ally to help contain China. But instead, we essentially drove Russia and China together.
Absolutely. If you stretch you mind back to the dawn of the 21st century, we were getting on pretty well: Differences in language and culture sure, and maybe some grumbling from OG Boomers, but we could cooperate on things like the ISS and there even talk of Russia joining NATO/the EU for the sake of convenience if nothing else.
There was always going to be geostrategic disagreements and conflicts of interest between Russia and the U.S. - that's just the nature of the politics of large powers.

No. They have zero self-awareness. That's why Russia, and Putin, shouldn't negotiate with them; unconditional surrender, or nothing. Merkel, pretending she would guarantee compliance and Poroshenko, President of Ukraine admitted they sabotaged the Minsk accords in order to secretly arm the Ukronazi army, as they cried it was Russia who refused to honor the accords.
Just saying, Malaysia arent really pals with the US even prior to this. The government likes your dollars but dislikes the foreign policy. Mahathir, in fact, blames Soros (and foreign Jewry) for the 1997 economic crisis which basically ended the Asian Tigers era for most countries in the region, and one that Malaysia still haven't recovered from, to this day.

People in the west don't seem to understand this. The three big powers that be in modern Russia are the Russian Orthodox Church, groups like Wagner, and since Putin, extremely nationalistic oligarchs. It's almost certain that anyone they'd put in to replace Putin would be someone who really hated NATO. On the off chance some other movement in Russia installs someone, they're probably going to be more in the USSR direction. Regardless, Putin is ironically probably their last chance to have normal relationships with Russia.
