Chris grew up with Bob and Bob was a tech savvie muthafucka if ever I saw one. I can only speculate but I have to think that Bob probably taught him how to do some of that stuff.
There is of course the famous quote from the father call where Chris says he built a home PC from scratch and Matt up and says why aren't you building computers and Chris almost has a moment where he realises why couldn't he have done that.
(unless I have the timestamp wrong it's about 22 minutes in).
That could have been something Chris could have done and then gotten some real money for.

Imagine an alternate timeline where Chris takes after Bob and follows his inclination for tech. Bob fostering Chris's natural talent and interest with technology, passing on what he learned from his time as an engineer with Chris listening eagerly, eventually leading Chris down the obvious STEM career path.
Fast forward 20 years. Bob is in the garage workshop he shares with his son, tinkering with some fixer-upper car parts and listening to jazz on the docked iPod that Chris set up for him. Chris bursts in excitedly to reveal that he's been promoted again.

I was going to say because he might want to avoid similar events now that something bad happened in the past, but then I remembered he is Chris.
