Definitely something not quite right about PL's account of their history. According to PL, the crime committed was robbery of a client in 2002 (when PL was aged 16). Basically, they stole a client's credit cards and used them to buy stuff.
According to PL they were sentenced at Nottingham Crown court to two years borstal. This seems odd, as nobody would get two years for that particular crime as a first time offender. Stephen Fry committed a similar crime and only got 3 months. So, there must be a lot more to that story. However, there isn't any press coverage of the crime or the conviction. It's likely that they would not have been named anyway (due to young age) even if there was. The online Nottingham Crown court records don't go back that far either.
According to PL they were sent to a young offenders institute in January 2004 and released on 10/09/2004. PL served 8 months before release. PL was tagged for a further 4 months after release.

I used to write full-time on political stuff, and so I'd be combing through the day's tweets and he'd do one "Donald Trump's Day So Far" [insert bullet points about Trump's about to go to prison] ... "And it's still only 10:32a."
He'd do that exact form tweet almost EVERY SINGLE DAY while Trump was in office, still doing it some now that Trump's out of office, always acting like Trump is about to go to prison for life. I don't know if he grasped the irony of doing the "it's finally over for Trump" tweet day after day after day and it never coming true. But I suppose that is akin to what the rest of the media was doing, just more extreme.

Possibly. Most people would get a suspended sentence on a first offence even in 2004 - or a few months in worst case. Perhaps, PL had some previous.
In any event, PL didn't seem to get much of a lesson from his incarceration judging by this tweet:
